How The Boat Race propelled me into a career in sport

Annie Lush rowed in the 2001 Boat Race, which saw a three foot win for the Light Blues - it remains the closest verdict in the history of the race. It was a moment which was in many ways set to change her life. It was the trigger for a sporting obsession: Team GB sailing at the London Olympics, winning four world championship titles, being part of the first all women’s crew in the Volvo Ocean Race and most recently, helping to launch the Magenta Project.

To the teenager carrying her own oars into Berlin’s Soviet zone through Checkpoint Charlie to go and train with the East German women’s squad, to becoming the first paid female rowing coach in the UK and the first female head coach of a Boat Race programme.
