About Joe:
What is your reason for your course choice?
The combination of principles from both science and engineering really interested me academically, and the huge potential impact you have on people’s lives helps too
When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?
I started rowing in my first term at university in 2022 at my college, Downing; I had been a very keen cyclist in sixth form, but hadn’t been able to bring my road bike so I needed to find another sport. The social part of rowing really encouraged me to stick with it.
What was your first rowing club and coach?
Downing College Boat Club, my first coach was Sam Lewin
What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?
My first sporting inspiration I really remember well was Mark Beaumont, a Scottish endurance cyclist who inspired me and my friends to undertake a Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle after our A-Levels
What sport did you prioritise growing up?
Cycling is certainly the first sport I took very seriously, though I hiked a lot and played a little cricket, badminton and hockey
What is your favourite non-academic book?
I recently read Ethics in the Real World which was very interesting.
What is your dream job? Or what do you aspire to do once you complete your studies?
I’m not fully sure yet but probably something more on the computer science side of engineering. I’ve spent a lot of time working on machine learning projects in the past couple of year and something in that area would be very interesting.
