About Gemma:

What course are you studying and what level?

Wellcome Trust PhD in Stem Cell Biology

Why did you chose that course?

My PhD is trying to improve platelet production from stem cells in the lab. This would be really useful as it would minimise the need for platelet donors and provide a reliable supply of platelets. The idea that my work could help the lives of others in the future is exciting and the reason why I chose to work with stem cells.

When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?

My school had taster sessions for rowing and I went along to theses. I had previously played several other different sports and was convinced that I would only be rowing for a few weeks. Clearly that did not happen, and I’m still rowing 12 years later! I think what I love most about the sport is the people – I have made so many friends through rowing and love being surrounded by other driven, enthusiastic people.

What was your first rowing club and coach?

Lady Eleanor Holles – Stuart Larner and Anna Blackstone

What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?

I think watching the Olympics, especially when it was in London in 2012, was hugely inspiring and showed how much athletes could achieve with dedication and love for their sport.

How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?

Rowing has been a huge part of my life – I have made amazing friends through it and had unforgettable experiences. The Boat Race is such a unique event and to be a part of that has been so special.

If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?

I think I would probably try out triathlon.
