About Catherine:
What course are you studying and what level?
DPhil in Cardiovascular Science
Why did you chose that course?
Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and I love being a part of the scientific research in the lab that is helping to improve the lives of those affected.
When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?
I started rowing in the 2012-13 season at school (at the age of 12) after being offered 6 ‘taster sessions’. I never intended to carry on but enjoyed it so much I kept going! I love the competitive nature of the sport, and the feeling of everyone pushing each other on to make the boat go as fast as possible on race day.
What was your first rowing club and coach?
LEHBC, Stuart Larner and Anna Blackstone
How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?
The Boat Race has been a huge part of my life ever since starting university in 2018, as I’ve rowed every year of my undergraduate and postgraduate courses so far, whether at Cambridge or Oxford. It is such a rewarding experience to be a part of the Boat Race, and I feel very lucky to be a part of it and train alongside an inspiring group of athletes.
If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?
Although I love team sports, I think I could be quite good at triathlons as I can run and swim relatively well (the cycling probably needs a bit of practice!) Alternatively, I used to be an assistant sailing instructor when I was around 13/14 years old, so would potentially be good at this.
