About Carys:

What course are you studying and what level?

I am studying medicine and am in the fourth year of the course. I have just started the clinical half of the course having completed by intercalated degree last year.

Why did you chose that course?

I had always been interested in the science but also really enjoy the practical applications and people orientated aspects of Medicine. Exploring the intricate functioning of the human body both in healthy and diseased states has always been fascinating.

When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?

I learnt to row at my college boat club (Caius Boat Club) in my first year of university, 2021. All the freshers were trying out the sport and I really enjoyed it so haven’t stopped since.

I love the amazing team spirit that all rowing squads have, also the process of constantly aiming to improve you’re own performance in order to benefit the crew as a whole.

What was your first rowing club and coach?

Caius Boat Club – Tim Schmalz

What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?

Watching the Olympics

How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?

Rowing is now a huge part of my life, training twice a day, everyday with team mates who soon become close friends. Being part of the Boat Race squad gives you so many opportunities from training alongside talented athletes, to getting to race all over the world, to joining the wide community of Cambridge alum and supporters.

If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?

Rugby
