About Simon:
What course are you studying and what level?
MPhil in Nuclear Energy
Why did you chose that course?
I see it as a crucial part of our clean energy transition and a necessary element of future space missions.
When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?
I started competitively in 2014 in Portland, but have loved rowing in dinghies since age 3. I love being out on the water and the interfaces between humans, mechanical machines, and nature.
What was your first rowing club and coach?
Oregon Rowing Unlimited, with Plamen Petrov and Nadia Petrova
What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?
A climber named Joe Simpson, as depicted in the documentary “Touching the Void”. While climbing Siula Grande with a fellow named Simon Yates, Simpson falls and breaks his leg. Yates attempts to rescue him, but is forced to cut him loose to save himself. Simpson falls into a crevasse and is left for dead; Yates even burns his clothes symbolically. Despite severe frostbite, delirium, dehydration, and a broken leg, Simpson crawls back to camp, rescuing himself.
How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?
Rowing has taken me all over the world, helped me get to know so many people, get to know myself, and given me purpose sometimes when I need it. I’m sure being at CUBC will be the same.
If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?
Track cycling
What is your favourite non-academic book?
The Stand (unabridged), by Stephen King
