Success at London 2012 for Blue Olympians
7th Aug 2012

The action has been intense at Dorney Lake and all races have been hotly contested. Here is an update on how the Blue Olympians fared across the four different boat classes in which they raced:

Dark Blue Constantine Louloudis and Light Blue Tom Ransley were the first medallists of the Blues on Wednesday, winning Bronze in the thrilling Men’s Eight race. They were pushed hard for the bronze by fourth-placed USA, including Light Blue Jake Cornelius, and fifth-placed Dutch, including former Oxford President, Sjoerd Hamburger.

Thursday saw the final of the Women’s Eight, in which the GB crew, including Light Blue Annabel Vernon, raced hard against tough opposition to fifth place.

There was Blue representation in two of the finals on Friday – the Men’s Pair and the Men’s Quadruple Sculls. In the Pair, Cambridge President George Nash won a Bronze medal, just millimetres behind the silver-medallists from France. Australian Brodie Buckland and Canadian Scott Frandsen, both Dark Blues, raced hard to fifth and sixth places respectively. In the B-Final of the Pair, Light Blue Silas Stafford came second for the USA. The Men’s Quadruple Sculls was another close contest, with Oxford’s Tom Solesbury coming in fifth as part of the GB crew.

The much anticipated final race of the Olympic regatta, the Men’s Four, featured three Oxbridge Olympians in the GB crew and one in the American crew. Team GB dominated as Dark Blues Andrew Triggs-Hodge and Pete Reed, and Light Blue Tom James all became Olympic Gold medallists for the second time. Oxford’s Charlie Cole won Bronze for the USA.

Two of GB’s Bronze medallists will be returning to their University studies come September. Constantine Louloudis returns to Oxford to avenge last year’s defeat against George Nash who will lead Cambridge as President. The 2013 BNY Mellon Boat Race will take place on Sunday 31 March 2013 at 4:30pm.
